The University of Surrey was established on 9 September 1966 with the grant of its Royal Charter, but its roots go back to a late 19th-century concern to provide greater access to further and higher education for the poorer inhabitants of London. Battersea Polytechnic Institute was founded in 1891 and began concentrating on science and technology around 1920, teaching students for degrees from the University of London.
Its academic reputation steadily grew and in 1956, it was one of the first institutions to be designated a ‘college of advanced technology’. It was renamed Battersea College of Technology in 1957.

University of Bristol
Education Partner
Before the University of Bristol, there was University College, Bristol, which existed from 1876 to 1909.
Its history can be traced back to the efforts of John Percival, headmaster of Clifton College, to press for the establishment of such an institution. In 1872, Percival wrote to the Oxford colleges observing that the provinces lacked a university culture.
The following year he produced a pamphlet called ‘The Connection of the Universities and the Great Towns’, which was well received by Benjamin Jowett, Master of Balliol College, Oxford. Jowett was to become a significant figure, both philosophically and financially, in the establishment of University College, Bristol.
In June 1874, a meeting took place at Bristol’s Victoria Rooms ‘to promote a School of Science and Literature for the West of England’. Percival and Jowett spoke at the meeting, and won the support of Albert Fry and Lewis Fry, members of an influential and affluent local family.

At the University of Greenwich, degrees range from Chemical Engineering to Civil and Electrical Engineering and are studied in hi-tech laboratories at Medway Campus. All engineering degrees share a common first year. Students then go on to specialise in their chosen area of engineering. Most of the engineering disciplines offer a four-year course which leads to a master’s degree. Meanwhile, applicants who achieve lower tariff points can enter through an ‘extended’ degree, which includes a foundation year.
