Dr Paula Palade

My job is to set guardrails for the safe introduction of AI in cars. AI ethics is a system of principles and techniques intended to inform the development and responsible use of artificial intelligence technology.  My role is to ensure safety in transport and the development of connected and autonomous vehicles (CAVs) at JLR.

What does a typical day at work look like for you?

My days are different – from attending standardisation meetings to reading technical documents or legislation to disseminating and upskilling. I work with external stakeholders, and it is great to work with likeminded people from other companies when we are drafting a standard, as an example. I love talking about this topic and training other colleagues in this space.

What advice would you give to your 15 year old self

Don’t doubt yourself, you will achieve great things, with discipline, perseverance and resilience.

Who or what inspired you to get into engineering?

I am an academic at heart. I am described as JLR’s professor-in-residence based on my academic achievements, which include a PhD in electrical engineering, patents, publications, and forward-looking research roles.

I must say that my parents inspired me to get into engineering, specifically my father. I am now a proud engineer at a fantastic engineering company #JLR, the daughter of engineers, the wife of an engineer and the mother of (hopefully) future engineers, my life has been truly enhanced by engineering!

What are the best and worst things about the job?

The best thing is to understand that my work will have an impact on saving lives. The worst thing is that this impact will happen sometime in the future, and I do not get to see the immediate effects of my work.
