Wikithons
Want to help us improve the gender balance of women and women engineers on Wikipedia?
The Wikipedia and Wikidata entries that the centenary trail map is based on are generated by volunteer editors and researchers, trained and engaged through Wikithons around the country, supported by research into the WES archives and other archive materials and sources. The map continues to evolve as Wikipedia and Wikidata entries change and improve. If you notice something or someone missing, let us know.
Keep an eye out for future Wikithons. Or add or edit some pages yourself. We will be publishing some “How To” guides here soon.
Watts in a Home Electric Dreams
The Watts in A Home – Electric Dreams project, was funded by the Royal Academy of Engineering Ingenious Fund, and celebrated 100 years of women’s involvement in engineering and electrical power in the home, catalysed by the Electrical Association of Women which was formed in 1924.
Working with our regional clusters, cohorts of women engineers in Bristol, Newcastle, Cardiff, Milton Keynes, Birmingham and Glasgow, developed their public engagement and professional skills to prepare and deliver an electrifying, immersive public event at various visitor attractions around the UK. See our project evaluation report here.

Centenary Trail Project 2019-2021
In 2019 the Women’s Engineering Society celebrated its centenary. Founded with the intention of supporting women into employment and education in the varied fields of engineering, WES has had many notable members with fascinating lives and careers, but very few are known. The Centenary Trail project was funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund and aimed to put women engineers firmly on the map.
Heritage Open Days
Every year we take part in the National Trust’s Heritage Open Days Festival in September. We coordinate talks and events with heritage venues and bring the history of our women engineers to light and life. We ask our members and partners of they would like to get involved too.
The theme for 2026 is Everyday Lives and will take place between 11th – 20th Sept
