Women’s Engineering Society Statement on the Supreme Court Ruling

The Women’s Engineering Society remains committed to championing inclusion, diversity, and equality within engineering. We recognise the importance of creating an environment where all individuals, regardless of sex or gender identity, feel valued and supported in their careers and contributions to the sector.

Following the Supreme Court ruling on sex-based definitions within the Equality Act 2010, we are reviewing all elements of our operating model to ensure legal compliance while upholding our mission of inclusivity.

Our approach

  • Reviewing our Governance, Policies, Products and Services. We will review and engage with our members to determine whether updates to our Articles of Association, policies, products, and services are necessary. Our approach will ensure alignment with legal requirements while upholding our commitment to inclusivity.
  • Communicating clearly.  We will provide clear messaging to ensure members, partners, and stakeholders understand any necessary updates we might need to make, whilst reinforcing WES’s commitment to inclusion in engineering.
  • Providing continued advocacy and support: We will provide guidance for staff, trustees, and volunteers on implementing changes while continuing to promote diversity and inclusion in engineering.

Our mission remains, and has always been, to empower and support women in engineering. We will continue to work closely with our community to ensure WES remains an inclusive and legally compliant organisation that fosters a diverse and welcoming space for all.
