WES Early Careers Board

The WES ECB (Early Careers Board) consists of twelve WES Members who are working, training or studying in an engineering field and consider themselves to be early in their career.

  • What is the aim of the Early Careers Board?

    The aim of the ECB is to connect with, promote engineering and guide engineers in their early careers. The ECB aims to make WES more accessible to younger members, to reflect their concerns and priorities and provide input to WES Trustees and staff, allowing the voices of younger engineers to be heard. The Members making up the ECB also act as role models for young women considering engineering and applied science. The ECB enable early career WES members to influence the direction of travel of WES, with the opportunity for personal, professional and leadership development through board experience and involvement in projects and strategy setting.

  • What projects have the Early Careers Board done?

    The WES Early Careers Board run a range of engaging and interesting projects. We are all passionate about engaging our community with all things engineering, and are excited to continue sharing industry insights and career ideas, and supporting existing engineers in the field through our social media, newsletter articles and events.     Social Media
    Our social media accounts are used to channel our campaigns, competitions and event information with the aim to inspire the next generation of engineers and support existing engineers in their daily role. Our campaigns cover a range of topics including: celebrating engineers and sharing their experiences, promoting engineers work and expertise, providing insights about the industry, and taking part in STEM Challenges.     Podcasts
    The WES ECB team are in the process of recording a podcast series – The WES Waffle – looking at issues affecting engineers in their first year of professional work. We will be discussing issues such as imposter syndrome, picking your career path, settling in, and workwear, all in bite-size 10-minute episodes. Available on Spotify soon!
    We’re also working on a second series, with some longer listens exploring the wide world of engineering and all the amazing career paths it can lead down. Watch this space…
    Lottie Tour
    Every year the WES Early Careers Board organises a ‘Lottie Tour’ as a way to capture the interest of a younger engineering audience by showing current engineers ‘touring’ with Lottie Dolls.
    This year the seventh #WESLottieTour takes place during Tomorrow’s Engineers Week 2022, to show how varied and exciting it is to work in engineering! Find out more information on the Lottie website
    Competitions
    The WES Early Careers Board run competitions for early career engineers. It’s a great way to share some of your work and meet other engineers!
    Events
    The WES Early Careers Board run internal and external events to encourage networking, and empowering ECB Stakeholders. For example, Virtual Speed Networking Events. Keep a look out on our social media channels for the next event.

    Welcome to our new series featuring profiles from each of our board members. Our latest spotlight focuses on Caitlin McCall, Printed Electronics Engineering Doctorate at the University of Swansea.
    During the film Caitlin delves into her childhood experiences, inspirations, and ambitions to become a Chartered Engineer.
    Alongside each profile release, members will be hosting social media takeovers on our Twitter & Instagram, sharing behind the scenes content and exclusive information about their engineering applications.
    Following both Alex Mather’s and Caitlin McCall’s profiles, more of our members will showcase their career experiences throughout the year. The WES ECB consists of engineers with a diverse working skillset. Members’ professions range from Civil Engineering and Automotive, to Mechanical and beyond.
