The Systems and Test Engineer will be responsible for carrying out Systems Engineering and/or test related activities (e.g., requirements management, V&V, system design, build & integration plans, test procedures, commissioning and testing etc.) throughout the lifecycle of Reaction Engines’ products. They will also be required to contribute to the development of related tools, methods, and processes to improve our company-wide capability.

Accounatbilitis and Responsibilities

The Systems and Test Engineer may be deployed to support any of the following business priorities:

  • Commercial projects within Applied Technologies, bringing SABRE technologies to other markets
  • The next phase of SABRE design & development and simplifying space access
  • Realising high-speed flight
  • Developing in-house testing capability and building relationships with external test facilities

Over the course of their deployment and depending on their expertise the candidate may be accountable for the some of the following:

  • Work with or lead multidisciplinary teams to design, integrate and test complex and novel systems
  • Lead or contribute to day-to-day Systems Engineering tasks, including: System design, requirements generation & management, verification & validation (V&V), interface definition & management, configuration & change control, safety and risk assessments (e.g. HAZOP, FMEA), trade & down-selection
  • Lead or contribute to day-to-day test tasks, including: Build, transport, integration, commissioning, and testing plans and procedures, undertaking commissioning and testing, supporting build and integration, engaging with suppliers and test facilities
  • Apply knowledge and lateral thinking to enable the progression of tasks that have not been done before
  • Establish, develop, and maintain effective working relationships with all colleagues, contractors and partnering agencies
  • Contribute to the development of System Engineering and test tools, methods, and policies
  • Contribute to activities supporting the Function Head in delivery of business improvement activities to enhance the capability of the function
  • Undertake any other duties as may reasonably be required in line with the level of responsibility of the post and to meet the changing needs of the organisation

  • Experience in design, development and testing of unique systems
  • Experience in leading product or technology development projects
  • Demonstrable approach to interdisciplinary problem solving and design trade-offs (systems thinking)
  • Preparing, presenting, and reporting technical work to peers, seniors, external suppliers
  • Track record of successful product or project delivery
  • Strong practical mind-set and abilities


  • Experience of systems engineering process and methods
  • Knowledge of tools for system design (i.e. requirements management DOORs™)
  • Exposure to a prototyping or development environment
  • Knowledge & experience with build verification and validation
  • Familiarity with aero-engines and/or rocket engines (including turbomachinery and heat exchangers)



  • Engineering degree and/or equivalent work experience
  • At least 3 years of engineering experience (experience from different industries will be considered)


  • Chartered engineer or pursuing chartered status

Reaction Engines operates a flexible working policy, part-time hours may also be negotiable. Some travel to customers, suppliers, and build & test sites may be required.

Salary - £31,000 to £37,000 dependent on experience

Working hours - 35 hours per week, Monday to Friday
