Key Responsibilities

1. Taking ownership of R&D project elements within the Test Department to deliver high quality results to the department’s stakeholders and customers, both internal and external:

  • Driving on-time delivery of project and business objectives within the Test Dept
  • Excellent communication, both upwards and downwards, both technical and non-technical
  • Driving test project delivery from inception to completion report

2. As the technical link between Research activities (University) and GKN Abingdon’s Physical Test, ensuring the generation of real-world results from theoretical/research inputs

3. Supporting internal and external customer product/technology development through design review, technical feedback, and route-cause investigation
4. Developing the Innovation Centre’s test capabilities to meet R&D Test requirements, through design and delivery of test systems:

  • Electro-mechanical power and control systems, from Serial comms and LV control, through inverter-driven 3-ph power, to HV (<1000V) DC systems
  • Test control and data management software (Motec, Labview, Python, Vector)

5. Delivering Research-level high-quality test outputs, through design, compliance, calibration, verification, and audit

6.Supporting the continuous improvement of all aspects of Test activity:

  • Developing test systems to improve safety, functionality, and efficiency
  • Writing and maintaining processes and procedures
  • Identifying and actioning improvement opportunities

7. Taking part in risk assessments of all activities and systems in Test, and proactively seek to eliminate, minimise or manage risk wherever it is found

8.  Supporting the Test Area during internal and external customer visits

Essential Qualifications & Experience

  • Engineering degree qualified in a Mechanical or Electrical discipline, or equivalent level and breadth of knowledge Experience in a hands-on engineering role Experience with validation testing of a technical product or technology
  • Experience working with and designing electro-mechanical systems

Desirable Skills & Experience

  • Awareness of safety in a hazardous technical environment, preferably including electrical safety Familiarity with Hybrid and Electric Vehicles and their associated powertrain technologies Experience writing real-time software for control systems, such as Labview or MoTeC Good working knowledge of instrumentation and control components and their practical use Experience with research-level technology development (e.g. at a university)
  • Experience with specification and selection of instrumentation and control components / systems
