About the role

As the Principal Engineer, you will report to the Head of Network, Design and Engineering and lead the Sustrans engineering team across the North of England, managing technical programme of works.

You will provide technical guidance to Engineers and Technicians, leading the team in creating better places for walking and cycling through the design and construction of practical, sustainable transport projects.

You will build and manage internal and external relationships with key people such as contractors, local authorities, Active Travel England, professional bodies and the general public.

This role will require travel and work at locations as necessary to undertake projects on behalf of Sustrans. Candidates can be based within commutable distance to Leeds, Manchester or Newcastle as travel is necessary for key meetings and a minimum of 1 day per month in a nominated office hub.

If not already at Chartered or Incorporated Engineer status, you are willing to work towards this and we will support you as required.

You should be a proven leader, with demonstrable experience in motivating and managing a multidisciplinary team; ensuring all regulations are adhered to and best practise is followed at all times.

You will build relationships with ease, allowing you to communicate effectively with a wide range of people, from senior leaders and local authority partners to community engagement groups.

We aim to be a truly inclusive employer and welcome applications from people from all parts of the community, in particular from under-represented groups.

Sustrans is committed to reducing inequality, valuing diversity and enabling inclusion.
