We are seeking a highly motivated student for PhD studentship in the development of innovative, CMOS-based sensor solutions for x-ray detection and imaging.
This studentship is offered as part of a newly formed partnership between UCL and London-based sensor company ISDI. The aim is to create revolutionary solutions for x-ray detection and imaging based on advanced CMOS (Complementary Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor) architectures coupled with cutting-edge scintillation technology. The resulting devices will be applied to a variety of high-end applications of x-ray imaging encompassing medical diagnostics, industrial inspections and security scans.
The student will be involved in all parts of the process – from sensor design to fabrication, testing with visible light and x-ray radiation, use on selected imaging applications – consequently gaining a wide range of diverse skills which will make them eminently employable across industry and academia. This studentship offers a rare opportunity to spend time in industry without leaving central London; ISDI is also committed to include the student in their training sessions.
The involved academic group has an internationally leading profile and an exceptional publication record. This project will provide opportunities for high-profile publications and conference presentations, and a wide range of opportunities for interdisciplinary collaborations. As well as being exposed to cutting-edge sensor development and imaging techniques, the student would gain experience in a range of applications across medicine, materials science, non-destructive testing and security.
Funding will be for 3.5 years, with a tax free stipend of £17,009 per year plus UK/EU-level university fees. Applicants must be UK students or EU students who will have spent the previous 3 years in the UK. Outstanding students from outside the EU may apply if they have funding to support international fees. The closing date is 30th August 2019 and the start date can be anytime in the period September - December 2019.
Applicants must have or expect to obtain either an MSc or a UK first class or 2:1 honours degree or the international equivalent in the appropriate area of physical science, as well as experimental, mathematical and numerical skills; creative and critical thinking; excellent writing and oral communication skills; self-management and good working habits; capability to work independently. Programming skills are highly desirable.
