The University of Surrey is an international university with a world-class teaching and research profile and an enterprising spirit. Inventive and forward thinking, our heritage shows a recurring theme of doing things differently. The School of Mechanical Engineering Sciences is a major contributor to the research and teaching activities of the Faculty of Engineering and Physics Sciences.  We are home to four Research Centres, in Biomedical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, Aerodynamics and Environmental Flow, and Engineering Materials, as well as having a significant role in the Surrey Space Centre.

Our research activity is reflected strongly in our undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and training. The School is looking to strengthen its activity and leadership in the strategic areas of its portfolio through the recruitment to this post.

To build on our research and teaching excellence we are looking for a candidate who can support our endeavours in Biomedical Engineering. We are particularly interested in talking to candidates with strengths and experience in Biomechanics, biomimetic engineering, applied electronics, resilient and adaptive structures, and structural and materials modelling as applied to Biomedical Engineering. As a member of the School, ideally you should be able to teach modules across our core Mechanical Engineering Sciences programmes as well as supporting the broader research activity and postgraduate student supervision.

The School of Mechanical Engineering Sciences is home to around 40 academic members of staff, 750 undergraduate students and 70 doctoral students, as well as 40 research, technical and administrative staff. Each of our research centres are supported by cutting edge experimental facilities including advanced microscopy and surface analysis, wind tunnels, mechanical and vibration testing, design centre, and mechanical workshops. We are also home to a Rolls-Royce University Technology Centre and a NERC-National Centre for Atmospheric Sciences. The University has recently launched Institutes in Artificial Intelligence and Sustainability, both of which have strong resonance with activities undertaken in the School of Mechanical Engineering Sciences.

In addition to a sector-leading salary you will receive a generous annual leave entitlement and excellent development opportunities. Our benefits package includes discounted membership to the Surrey Sports Park, nursery on site and relocation assistance (subject to meeting certain criteria). At Surrey, we are committed to providing an inclusive environment that offers equitable opportunities for all, in the pursuit of Surrey’s vision to be a leading global University.

We work together to create a truly inclusive culture. The School has a current Athena SWAN Bronze Award and we place great value on diversity and welcome applicants from all backgrounds. We are seeking to increase the diversity within our community and would particularly encourage applications from women and from other under-represented groups. If you are successful in your application, you will join an energetic and innovative working environment with access to a variety of academic and professional development opportunities.
