The Role:

Thales UK FLX (Flight Avionics) has an exciting new role as part of its revised operating model – Integrated Project Team Leader. The position is entirely accountable and responsible for the delivery of the full engineering development to an agreed baseline program plan, with customer-facing external milestones, to appropriate levels of quality and non-recurring and recurring cost targets. You will work closely with a dedicated Programme Manager who we be primarily responsible for the external customer engagement.

The role is responsible for the full lifecycle development of the Product Line from definition of concept of operations, through full requirements development, subsequent architectural definition, partitioning and lower level requirements allocation, through all levels of system, hardware and software development and Integration, Verification, Validation and Qualification.  This includes Agile Software and Hardware teams.

The successful candidate will be expected to have, or rapidly obtain, a deep level of understanding of the latest Thales approach to organisation of engineering developments and application of engineering processes to cover the four levers of engineering competitiveness:

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate a thorough understanding of leading a large engineering team and a demonstrable record of accomplishment of putting that knowledge into action.  Experience in turning around engineering developments is valuable to this position.

A high degree of autonomy to lead all aspects of the development program within minimal supervision is necessary and expected.

Outstanding stakeholder management skills across all the facets of the business, both within the UK and across the global FLX BL are required in order to make engineering delivery as effective as possible.  Excellent team-working and team-leading skills are required, as is the ability to work highly effectively across both functional and operational boundaries influencing peers and senior stakeholders nationally and internationally, as necessary.

Key Responsibilities and Tasks

  • Ensure there is a clear mapping and understanding of Engineering responsibilities within the project team organisation

  • Ensure sufficient engineering skills and competence are available to the project team

  • Ensure sufficient specialist airborne Satcom domain skills and competence are available to the project team

  • Oversee all recruitment to secure new skills as required

  • Provide overall engineering leadership and act as an ambassador for the entire development team

  • Build critical international relationships essential to secure all external work packages

  • Implement an effective engineering development organisation, leveraging internal and external best practice

  • Lead reporting of the development program at multiple levels of management spanning, Country, BL, GBU and, where necessary and with appropriate management support, Thales Corporate CPRs

  • Meeting needs of external customer program, as advised by any external-facing Program Manager

  • Support turnaround of relationships with external customers

  • Guides and directs staff to achieve delivery excellence, to be aware of all discipline related issues and facilitate their resolution, and to be the primary sign-off for engineering plans and estimate generation with respect to the Engineering development program

  • Ensure people development (skills management, coaching, career development, mindset) is implemented within the team to ensure a strong level of general purpose engineering, domain engineering skills and soft skills and behaviours

  • Responsible for the deployment of practices and tools on the development program under the relevant process owner coordination and aligned with the BL and Country definition

  • Implements a culture of continuous improvement in engineering development activity for projects/programs

  • Advocates use of System Modelling, Simulation and Product Line Engineering techniques

  • Develop a coherent and robust and organisation and program approach to all aspects of Safety, Airworthiness and Certification

  • Support the wider engineering organisation outside the Iridium development team to develop best practice in the deployment of the new IPT Leader role in FLX UK

About you:

We are looking for a self-motivated and innovative individual with extensive experience in a technical and managerial role within an engineering environment, leading the delivery of engineering product development. You will possess experience of formal life cycle engineering development; ideally in an aerospace environment but this is not essential. You will possess excellent people management skills, with the ability to influence and challenge others to balance the needs of individual engineers with development program challenges. You will ideally enjoy working in a team environment, able to interface at all levels within engineering and manufacturing, operating successfully within a diverse and multi-cultural environment. You will work proactively to break down barriers between different parts of the business – opening up constructive dialogue to resolve complex and politically sensitive conflicts to achieve ground breaking solutions. Being able to work from own initiative with a high level of integrity and drive for continuous improvement is key.
