We have a fantastic opportunity for a Chartered Engineer to take up the position of Chief Engineer within our market leading Engineering Inspection business. Our purpose is ‘To keep people safe’ and we achieve this by continuing to improve our business that inspects over 3.5m items of plant every year across the UK and RoI through a team of over 600 highly skilled Engineer Surveyors.

The Chief Engineer role is the most senior focal point for all Engineering technical matters and therefore plays a critical part in the Leadership of Allianz Engineering, Construction & Power, ensuring the continuing development of the Inspection industry through development and maintenance of safe and legally compliant practices for all engineering field activities.

Our ideal candidate would not only possess technical Engineering knowledge but combine this with strong leadership capabilities, and a desire to work in a team to deliver sustainable change, setting new standards of expectation and delivery within our market.

The role will involve working from our Liphook head office for at least 1-2 days a week; however the role could be based within in either our Birmingham or Manchester offices for the remainder of the week should you require any flexibility.

Responsibilities include:-

A key member of the business’ Senior Management Team, working for the Director of Engineering, Construction & Power.

Leading a head office Standards team of Principal and Specialist Engineers, Health and Safety, Accreditation and Technical Training functions.

Acting as technical focal point for internal and external engineering policy, providing clear direction and leadership. Establishing, monitoring and developing Allianz Engineering Health & Safety, Technical, Quality and Engineering Standards, maintaining its certifications, accreditations and approvals.

Developing and maintaining safe and legally compliant practices for all Engineering field activities.

Providing a technical service in support of the overall Business Plan and technical support to Special Services’ range of technical fee-earning services, with ultimate responsibility for the technical integrity of Special Services’ products

Main duties are:

• Definition, communication and implementation of all Technical quality and service standards.

• Ensuring that Engineering operational controls are adequate to maintain business risks within defined parameters thereby keeping people safe, whilst managing PI insurance costs to an acceptable level for both In-Service and Special Services business.

• As a member of the Senior Management Team, contribute to the formulation of Engineering business strategy and key Engineering objectives, and produce and implement an annual plan for the Chief Engineer’s sphere of operation, monitoring performance against plan.

• Maintain and develop the Quality and Health & Safety Management System; ensuring approvals, certifications and accreditations are maintained.

• Ensuring provision of a central technical focal point of advice both for business staff and technical staff.

• Contribute to the development of the staff through the implementation of ‘Investors in People’, and technical training programmes

• Establishing and maintaining liaison and profile with relevant Trade Associations and Professional Bodies, ensuring Allianz Engineering, Construction & Power is represented on technical committees as appropriate, both nationally and internationally together with preparation of technical business papers in support of Allianz Engineering, Construction & Power and Industry issues.

• Controlling the review of EC Directives and potential changes to UK legislation.

• Develop and implement a Health and Safety regime for all AE field staff.

• Sponsor and take an active role in the development and embedding of service standards throughout Allianz Engineering, Construction & Power.

Skills & Experience:

The successful candidate will have:

• Professional Engineering qualifications to degree level and be a Chartered Engineer

• Proven strength of Engineering leadership and technical judgement

• Considerable leadership and management experience in a high risk Engineering industry. (e.g. Engineering Inspection, Nuclear, Petro-chemical, Pharmaceutical, Manufacturing or Construction)

• An ability to develop a thorough understanding and management of relevant legislation, national and international standard requirements, and quality and Health & Safety management cultures and processes in the UK and EC

• An ability to demonstrate sound knowledge of the different markets currently working with them and curiosity to develop knowledge of all sectors of Engineering Inspection market to support business decision making.
