Do you have a degree, or equivalent, in asset management, architecture or engineering, relevant post-qualification experience and a real interest in the country’s history and heritage? Then make the move to the House of Commons Strategic Estates team as an Asset Engineer.
Strategic Estates manage property and engineering infrastructures across a Parliamentary estate that consists of buildings that range from the historic Palace of Westminster to the modern Portcullis House. The estate is also located within a UNESCO World Heritage site and spans 4 conservation areas. Currently, the team’s annual budget is over £70m and there are around 150 ongoing capital projects. And, with several multi-million refurbishment projects planned over the next decade to rejuvenate some historic buildings and ageing engineering infrastructures, now’s a great time to join us.
In this role you will support the development and upkeep of lifecycle refurbishment and maintenance schemes on buildings and engineering systems in order to optimise their whole life cost and performance. As well as focusing on planning refurbishments, we’ll rely on you to maintain our high-level asset register and create initial building fabric and infrastructure maintenance schedules on project handover. You’ll also be responsible for evaluating BIM models and O&M manuals to establish refurbishment, maintenance and lifecycle replacement/disposal requirements. Creating schedules, anticipating possible risks, recommending solutions and developing aspects of business cases on complex projects – these are just some aspects of this highly varied role.
A rare chance to gain exposure to some truly unique buildings and engineering systems, you’ll regularly liaise with conservation architects, engineers and property and maintenance teams. Accordingly, you’ll need the ability to influence a wide range of stakeholders and present and convey technical information concisely to lay audiences. We’ll also be looking for an asset management background that has seen you successfully establish refurbishment and/or maintenance systems and/or plans. Experience of lifecycle management and costing methodologies such as PAS55, BS8544 and/or BS15686 is essential too, as is a well-organised approach, and the ability to make strategic decisions that deliver workable programmes.
