The successful applicant will be the Leader of the Optics (optical engineering) Group, currently comprised of 6 engineers and 5 technicians and responsible for all telescope optics at the Paranal Observatory, as well as deeply involved in the ELT mirror coating process, part of the Assembly Integration and Verification (AIV) phase of this new telescope.
The ideal candidate has 5 to 10 years of professional experience in Management and/or coordination of a team; Optical systems maintenance in a continuous operational environment; Project and contract management.
The position requires an excellent command of written and spoken English. A good working knowledge of Spanish is also required.

We are looking for an engineer/physicist to join the Electronic Detector Systems Group (EDES) to cover a wide range of roles, working in all aspects of designing and delivering new detector systems and their electronics to our observatories and partner organisations. The department comprises a group of 32 electronic engineers, physicists and technicians who are responsible for the definition, design and implementation of complex control systems for advanced optical and infrared astronomical instrumentation, detectors and telescope systems required for ESO's Observatories in Chile.
As a member of the Directorate of Engineering the successful candidate will work in the ESO matrix structure serving various projects and fulfilling tasks received from Project Managers. She or he will be assigned to the Telescope and Large Structures Group in the Mechanical Engineering Department and support projects, for example ALMA and ELT construction in the field of Mechanical Engineering. This includes involvement in many project phases typically consisting of design studies, contract follow-up, manufacturing, AIV and commissioning.
