Sir Robert Malpas CBE, FEng

Born in August 1927, Sir Robert obtained a first class degree in mechanical engineering from Durham University in 1948.
Joined Imperial Chemical Industries (ICI) in 1948. After becoming Head of Engineering in the Petrochemical Division, appointed a General Manager of a joint venture in Spain in 1963. In recognition of this work awarded the Spanish Order of Civil Merit in 1967. From 1966 to 1975 worked in ICI Europa, Brussels, becoming Chief Executive in 1973. Appointed a main Board Director of ICI in 1975, with specific responsibility for Organics Division, Engineering, and Eastern Europe. In 1975 awarded the CBE for services to export.

In 1978, moved from ICI to become President of Halcon International, a New York based chemicals process research company, acquired in 1982 by theTexas Eastern Corporation.
Joined the Board of BP plc in January 1983 as a Managing Director, with specific responsibilty for Chemicals, Research, Engineeringand Latin America, retiring in July 1989.Appointed Chairman of Powergen plc in May 1989, one of the successor companies of the CEGB in the privatisation of the electricity supply industry. Resigned in November 1990.Chairman of Cookson Group plc from July 1991 to October 1998. Non-executive director BOC plc 1981-1996, Non-executive director Baring Bros 1989-1995. British Co-Chairman of Eurotunnel plc from November 1996 to December 1998, and a non-executive director from 1987 to 2000. A non-executive Director of Repsol SA (Spain) 1989 – 2002, Member of the Advisory Board of SpecialChem Paris 1996 – 2000,, Chairman of Ferghana Partners a small mergers and acquisitions private company 1998 -2003. Chairman of Evolution plc a consultancy to financial services companies 2000 – 2005.-executive director of ENAGAS Spain 2002-2006.

Former President of the SCI (1988-89), past Senior Vice President of the Royal Academy of Engineering (1989-92), The first Chairman of LINK, the government scheme for funding research through partnership with industry, from its inception in 1986 until 1993. Chairman of the Natural Environment Research Council from 1993 to 1996. Honorary Fellow of The Institution of Mechanical Engineers and The Royal Society of Chemistry, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.

Currently - Chairman of RL Capital , a start-up company in the road tyre accessories business.

The Sir Robert Malpas Bursary administered by the Royal Academy of Engineering has been established by Sir Robert Malpas CBE FREng to enable outstanding graduate engineers to study for a full time MSc course in creative engineering at a UK university.
