Prof. Sanghamitra Mohanty presently positioned as President of Odisha Bigyan Academy under the Government of Odisha, Bhubaneswar posseses academic qualification of  M. Sc. and Ph. D. Degrees in Physics and has served as Lecturer, Reader and Professor in Computer Science in Utkal University, Bhubaneswar from 1986 to 2011 and Director of Womens’ Studies there from 2008 to 2011. She has served as the Vice Chancellor of North Orissa University, Baripada under the Government of Odisha from 2011 to 2014. She has done extensive research during the last 36 years in the field of Artificial Intelligence in general and Image Processing, Speech Processing and Natural Language Processing in particular leading to 13 Intellectual Property Rights(IPRs) in India as under:

She has published 167 research papers which include 46 papers in International Journals and 121 papers in Conference Proceedings starting in the field of Physics and later in Computer Science and Engineering. Prof. Mohanty has delivered more than 55 Invited Talks and Key Note Speeches in Conferences, Seminars and Workshops. Her name has been nominated and under active consideration for Fellowship of the Indian National Science Academy (INSA), New Delhi, National Academy of Science India (NASI), Allahabad and Indian Academy of Science (IAS), Bangalore. 

Prof. Mohanty has been honoured by several Organizations as an eminent academician and scientist and the prestigious Samanta Chandra Shekhar Award in Engineering and Technology for 2012 of the Government of Odisha is one among those. She has done research extensively on Indian Language Technology in general and Odia Language in particular through Government of India sponsored Projects towards the computerization of the Language, which is the official language of Odisha, a state in India, and some of the products are available freely from the website .

These Projects have been operated in Consortia Mode in Utkal University in collaboration with, IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Kharagpur, IIIT Allahabad, IIIT Hyderabad, IISc Bangalore, ISI Kolkata, JNU New Delhi, Central University Hyderabad, Anna University, Jadavpur University, Punjabi University, CDAC Pune and CDAC Noida. Pertaining to her research, she has guided several students for their Master and Ph. D. Degrees. Besides Research  and Administration she has acted as Expert in more than 55 committees of UGC, DOE and Govt. of Odisha and acted as Referee to many International/National Journals and Conferences. She is also life Member of 10 Professional bodies. Prof. Mohanty has authored many books and Conference Proceedings including one Springer publication. Her latest e-book is available in

Prof. Mohanty has visited several foreign countries for her academic work including as Visiting Professor to University of Nebraska Lincoln and Princeton University, USA. On invitation she has participated in the 8th General Meeting of EWM during 1997 at ICTP Italy from India.

In Recognition of the Research Expertise developed by her in Computer Science and Engineering during the functioning of the RC-ILTS-Oriya Project, the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, Govt. of India has sanctioned the Advanced Course at Master in Engineering level under their Specialized Manpower Development Programme in Knowledge Engineering with provision of full funding including faculty positions for five years to Utkal University since 2005 - 2006. The course is titled as “Master in Engineering in Computer Science and Engineering with specialization in Knowledge Engineering” (ME CSE (KE)) and it is the first such course in India. Students of the ME CSE (Knowledge Engineering) course have been selected by Microsoft India and Oxford University for Internship, United Nations University, Macau for Fellow Positions and Software Industries for job.

As Vice Chancellor of North Orissa University, Prof. Sanghamitra Mohanty has introduced Technology Oriented New Courses from 2011 like M. Tech. in Computer Science and Engineering and M. Tech. in Nano Science and Technology. She Organized one International Workshop with Lund University, Lund, Sweden and enrolled North Orissa University as a Member of South Asian Studies Network (SASNET). She also had made North Orissa University a Member of Association of Commonwealth Universities in  2012, a Member of the United States-India Educational  Foundation (USIEF) for Fulbright Fellowship, a Member in the Erasmus Mundus Project of Lund University and European Union where 10 Institutes of India (North Orissa University in one) and 10 Institutes of European Union were selected and that year 6 Persons of North Orissa University got selected to avail the Fellowship of the EMNITE Project in 2014-2015. She guided Computerization of the University functioning by procuring new computers and peripherals needed for it.

Prof. Mohanty arranged for Campus Networking through NMEICT Program of Govt. of India for use of Internet and E-Governance in the University effectively. A Government of India Programm named “Capacity Building in IT Tools” have been instituted since 2012 to impart Computer Training to  SC and ST students free of cost organized in cluster mode for the   University and affiliated Colleges under it. She also organized Sensitization Programs on different social issues for students, common man, illiterate people and Tribes and Gender Sensitization Programs (Five) for students. Under her stewardship North Orissa University Journal of Science and Technology and North Orissa University Journal of Social Science have been published for the first time with ISSN Numbers since 2012. Laboratories of variousTteaching Departments have been provided with state-of-the-art equipments through UGC Grants to facilitate studies and research and Smart Class Rooms have been  provided to every Department. 

Specifically, as the Director of Womens’ Studies Prof. Mohanty encouraged Women students in many ways to come forward and to face the challenges of life. Recently, she encouraged the Women participants of the International Conference on Advanced Computing and Intelligent Engineering as an Expert in the special session, “Women in Engineering” in 2016 and encouraged the participants to persue career facing the present day challenges of life being Career Women in general and Engineer in particular.
