Leaving University and looking for a graduate job, you could say that I fell in to the Maritime Engineering sector 10 years ago.  I have loved every minute and never looked back.  The diversity that the industry brings mean that any 2 days are never the same, working one week on a super yacht project and the next a warship!

Matchtech is the number 1 engineering recruiter in the UK.  My team place niche engineers in Maritime positions all over the world, which is both hugely exciting and rewarding, building long lasting relationships with candidates and clients, and working on some of the most exciting and innovative Maritime projects globally.

Much of my role requires me to work closely with the 2 maritime institutions, IMarEST (Institute of Marine Engineering Science and Technology) and RINA (Royal Institution of Naval Architects) where I have been able to write papers on the skills gap and the gender gap currently plaguing the industry, to help to secure the future talent pipeline.  This has also seen me join the Marine Industries Alliance Skills Group and the steering board of UKNEST, which represents the Naval industry, meaning that working with key industry figures we are making positive change.

I am so passionate about the industry that the opportunity to speak to school children, especially girls, and demonstrate the fantastic careers available in engineering is so rewarding.  It is so important to dispel the myths around engineering and demonstrate the creative, innovative, progressive, professional and well paid careers available within the sector.

I have been very lucky to be recognised as one of Make it in Great Britain’s ’30 under 30’ prominent people in engineering, and one of Management Todays ’35 under 35’ leading women in business.  This has given me a platform to take my passion to more children and hopefully inspire the next generation of Engineers.  Given my time again I would absolutely choose the same path.  I love what I do and the industry in which I do it!

Really its all about behaviours- drive, tenacity and enjoying what you do. it's so important to utilise your skills and do a job that you love- you spend so much time there! Really think through your career choices and work harder than anyone else. Above everything else it is hard work and application that sets the high achievers from the rest.
