Research Associate in Photocatalytic Anodic Metal Membranes for Micropollutant Removal – FoAMM.

This position is provided by the University of Bath as part of a 5-year EPSRC Established Career Fellowship in Water Engineering awarded to Prof Davide Mattia.

The accumulation, in the environment and in human food supply chain, of organic micropollutants, such as drugs, hormones or endocrine disruptors, represents today one of the biggest challenges to public health and the environment in developed countries. Legacy water treatment technology cannot remove micropollutants, requiring expensive and energy intensive additional treatment. Photocatalysis, considered the leading technology to treat micropollutants, suffers from a twin-set of limitations that have hindered more widespread adoption so far: Slurry reactors, where wastewater is mixed with a slurry of photocatalytic nanoparticles under UV illumination, can effectively degrade micropollutants but require costly downstream retention of the particles to avoid their leaching into the environment. Reactors with immobilised catalysts, on the other hand, have significantly lower activity due to lower contact area and higher light scattering.

As part of this large project, the research associate will focus on the initial development and testing of a novel family of photocatalytic nanoporous anodic metal membranes, combining the high activity of slurries and the stability of immobilised systems requiring no downstream removal.

The appointment full time (36.5 hours per week) and is being offered on a fixed term contract basis with an expected duration of 2 years.

Interviews will take place on 12/12/17 via skype and consist of a 7 minute presentation by the candidate (the presentation will incllude a brief summary of the applicant's previous research and at least on slide on how the applicant can contribute to the project) and 25 minutes of Q&A. Please check the job description for desired qualifications.

For inquiries please contact Prof Davide Mattia, phone: +44(0)1225-383961, email: d.mattia@bath.ac.ukhttp://www.bath.ac.uk/chem-eng/people/mattia/index.html, and https://researchportal.bath.ac.uk/en/persons/davide-mattia.

The Department of Electronic & Electrical Engineering is currently recruiting for a Senior Teaching Fellow in Robotics and Autonomous Systems, a joint appointment with the Department of Computer Science. The post is part of the University’s investment in its expanding multi-disciplinary robotics teaching and research and will have a major role in our new MSc Robotics & Autonomous Systems and its sister programme MSc Machine Learning & Autonomous Systems (Department of Computer Science).

Applicants should hold an undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline and, ideally, a PhD and a higher education teaching qualification or professional recognition. The Department has a strong record in both research and teaching and close collaborations with industry. 91% of its research activity was graded as either world-leading or internationally excellent in the Research Excellence Framework 2014 and it is consistently very highly placed in the National Student Survey, for example 95.76% Overall Satisfaction in NSS 2017, ranked 4thin the UK.

In addition to a full CV, applicants must provide a teaching statement of up to 4 pages to cover their teaching background and experience, and explicitly state which modules in the new MSc they would be able to deliver. The ability to also contribute our new MEng Robotics Engineering would be an advantage, see http://www.bath.ac.uk/departments/department-of-electronic-electrical-engineering/for full details of our degree programmes.
