Inspiring women campaign

Let's raise awareness of the women who have helped shape our society!

Pioneering Women

Women started out as engineers long ago. Find out more about the pioneers who broke the mould and set up WES to inspire others to build a better world.

Winning Women

Women win awards and prizes for technical excellence and WES is delighted to introduce you to our first cohort of award winning technical women. The first tranche of women we will highlight were selected by a panel led by WES Past President Dorothy Hatfield.

The WES Karen Burt Award is presented annually to the most outstanding newly chartered woman engineer.

WES is also delighted to sponsor the second prize for the IET Young Woman Engineer of the Year award.

Technical women are also found with UK Honours. In 2010 Jenny Brody of Airbus was acknowledged for her work at Airbus. Jenny is a past Trustee of the Verenea Holmes Trust which was a WES spin off set up in 1969.

Inspiring women at WES events

At the 2009 British Science Festival our first panel event brought together four inspiring women, chaired by WES member Kate Bellingham, Bronwyn Kunhardt, Janine Freeman, Maggie Aderin Pocock and Barbara Freeman.

Shaping the Future, sponsored by and held at the IET Savoy Place on 15 December 2009, brought together women from many disciplines to hear from Dervilla Mitchell about Life, T5 and life after T5.

We joined forces in January with womenintechnology.co.uk and the European Professional Women's Network (EPWN) for 'Women of Substance', kindly sponsored by the Royal Institution. This brought together artist Tess Barnes (featuring in The Woman Engineer Spring 2010) with Lynda Armstrong of Shell, Bee Thakore of BigonGood, Julie Greensmith (University of Nottingham) and Christine Ashton of WES sponsors TfL for a great evening of networking and inspiration.
